The Gemara quotes a verse in Deuteronomy (12:23). ״רַק חֲזַק לְבִלְתִּי אֲכֹל הַדָּם כִּי הַדָּם הוּא הַנָּפֶשׁ״.

But be strong and make sure that you do not partake of the blood; for the blood is the life, and you must not consume the life with the flesh.

The stress of the “be strong” indicates that there must have been a strong desire to drink blood. Let us try to understand this. There is an ancient idea that in most cultures that the blood force is the life force, which is a natural conclusion anyone would draw even with no medical training. When a person becomes emotional he feels his heart beat and the blood rushing through his arteries. If a person bleeds out he dies. Thus the ancients easily believed that by drinking the blood of their victim, animal or in some cases human, they could somehow draw in their life force. This is the partial explanation for commandment. There are also more mystical explanations such as the blood represents the animalistic desires, and one must not “eat the blood”, meaning gratify the animal needs.

Even though it is rare to find someone today who desires to drink blood, we live in a culture which has difficulty with animal needs and pretends that all repression is harmful and primitive. The idea of sexual restraint is alien to secular culture. But you cannot fight or change human nature easily. Ironically those who claim to have no inhibitions sexually can be most oppressive and repressive toward themselves and others in different ways. Perhaps they torture themselves by exercise or eating excessively, or they go overboard in terms of environmental or health concerns. They decry animal abuse, because after all they are living things, but have advocate abortion even for non-medical reasons.  The point is, humans thrive when they appropriately manage and conserve their impulses. Humans experience subtle and sublime emotions of peace, tranquility, and self mastery when they are able to work within certain limits instead of a gratifying every urge. There is no way to escape this basic idea of human nature. It is like pretending that you do not need to sleep; one can cheat sleep for a while, but it always catches up with you or you become ill. So too, with all essential aspects of human nature. When people try to run away from it they just seek new and different crazy ways to oppress or repress themselves, often times with less helpful results.

אגרא דכלה דברים יב:כג

רק חזק לבלתי אכל הדם (דברים יב כג). תרגום יונתן לחוד איתוקפין ביצריכון מטול דלא למיכל אדמא. נ"ל אחר שנדקדק בפסוק הנה מה שאמר לדבר הזה חז"ק, כבר נדרש בדברי רבותינו (ספרי מ"ב), אבל רשות ניתן לדרוש. ועוד נדקדק מ"ש לבלת"י, היה לו לומר רק חזק ולא תאכל וכו' או שלא תאכל, ואמר לבלתי אכל וכו', דמשמע נוסף לשמירת הלאו עוד תצטרך חיזוק, ואמרו רז"ל במדרש (ויק"ר פ"ד א') אמר הקב"ה לנפש, אני כתבתי עליך בתורה רק חזק לבלתי אכל הדם, ואת יוצאת וחוטאת איתמהה נפש כי תחטא (ויקרא ה א), (עיין בפרשת ויקרא כתבנו שם באריכות דברי המדרש ופירושו). וכאן המצטרך לעניינינו הוא, דהנה תרי חללי ליבא הם, חלל הימיני שם משכן היצר טוב והוא מלא רוח נפש הקדושה, וחלל השמאלי מלא דם והוא משכן היצר הרע נפש הבהמית המתאווה לתאווה, והנה זה כל עבודת האיש הישראלי ולאם מלאם יאמץ, היצר טוב בכח הנפש הקדושה אשר בחלל הימיני מבקש להטות אליו כל איברי הגוף עם כל החושים לעבודת הש"י ולתורתו וליראתו, וממאס בתענוגי הבלי העולם אשר היצר הרע עם הנפש הבהמיית מתאווה, ועל ידי זה מושל בכל פעם על הנפש הבהמיית ומתמעט הדם שבחלל השמאלי, ובפרוץ הדבר מתפשט הרוח חיים גם בחלל השמאלי, ומתבטל כל הדם ומתהפך מר למתוק ונעשה היצר הרע גם כן יצר טוב, ונעשה ב' פעמים רו"ח בגימטריא חת"ך, הוא השם החותך חיים לכל חי, שנעשה האדם כ"ל ח"י מלא כולו חיות. ומובן הדבר בהיפוך ח"ו מתפשט הדם גם בחלל השמאלי רחמנא ליצלן, ונעשה ח"ו ב' פעמים ד"ם, פ"ח יוקשים (תהלים קכד ז). על כן כששב האדם בתשובה מביא קרבן וזורקין הדם על המזבח, להוראה זו שחטא על ידי התפשטות הד"ם הוא היצר הרע שבכלל השמאלי, ועתה מקריבים לפני י"י. להוראה זו צונו הש"י במצוה שלא לאכול דם, כי הוא הרומז על כל כוחות היצר הרע לבל נגוע בקצהו, על כן חומר איסורו בכרת הנפש ח"ו. ונמצא בהתבונן באיסור אכילת דם, נצטרך להתחזק במצות י"י ולהתחזק לבל נבא לנגוע בקצה תאוות היצר הרע אשר כחו ומשכנו בדם החלל השמאלי. וז"ש הכתוב רק חזק לבלתי אכל הדם, רצ"ל מצורף למניעתך אכילת הדם תצטרך להתחזיק נגד היצר הרע, כי הדם הוא הנפש, ר"ל ד"ם הוא הנפש הבהמיי שבחלל השמאלי וצריך אתה חיזוק, וזה שתירגם יונתן לחוד איתוקפין ביצריכון. וז"ש במדרש אמר הקב"ה לנפש אני כתבתי עליך בתורה רק חזק לבלתי אכל הדם, ואת יוצאת וחוטאת אתמהה נפש כי תחטא, שהוא תמיה גדולה על הנפש, הש"י ינחנו במעגלי צדק:
